Dog Days starts with Greg Heffley and Rowley Jefferson going to Rowley's country club after school closes for the summer, but Greg is kicked out, because he complains of even the smallest predicaments. Then the beach trip that he was looking forward to is canceled because the Heffleys don't have enough money; they resort to going to the town pool, which Greg dislikes because of its open showers showing large, hairy men. Greg and Rowley decide to do a lawn care service called the "V.I.P. Lawn Care Service" to pay the debt. They make a poster, but after printing one copy, Mr. Jefferson says they cannot use his computer. Greg and Rowley show the poster to the neighbors. Mrs. Canfield, who lives on Greg's grandmother's street, is their first customer. Unfortunately, the job ends as a fiasco when the boys have never used a lawn mower before. When Greg tells Rowley he has to do most of the work while Greg holds the money, that makes Rowley angry and he quits. Greg mows Mrs. Canfield's lawn by himself, but she refuses to pay him because he didn't mow all of her lawn.

Greg's birthday comes, and he wants money. During the party, Susan confiscates said money to pay off Rowley's dad's smoothie bill. Greg also gets a Ladybug, a cell phone that can only make emergency calls and home calls. Greg, Rodrick and mom go to the local pet store and Greg buys an angelfish, which he raises with care. Rodrick, on the other hand, gets a pet pirahna which he doesn't feed or clean the bowl. After a while, mom puts the piranha with Greg's angelfish. After a trip to the waterpark, Greg finds that the piranha ate his angelfish while they were gone, upsetting Greg (though he doesn't get angry at his mother for mixing the two fish). The Heffleys get a new dog, Sweetie, which causes significant problems for Greg's summer. Greg and his mom run into the Jeffersons in the supermarket and they say they are going to the beach and that Greg can come with them. Greg is kicked out when he zaps Rowley using static electricity in the hotel. Greg is afraid that his dad is going to sell him to an orphanage, and he uses his Ladybug. After a long talk with the police, Frank gives the cops the tickets for a baseball game, and it turns out that Frank was giving Sweetie to Gramma. After losing a "video game tournament" Greg is upset, but sees pictures of the summer mom took and rethinks his summer. Perhaps all he need is a little nudge in the world after the summer adventure.
